Wrightwood, CA
County: San Bernardino
History
Wrightwood, California is a small mountain community located in the San Gabriel Mountains within the Angeles National Forest. Its history dates back more than a century.
The area where Wrightwood is situated was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Serrano people. They utilized the region for hunting, gathering, and trading for thousands of years before European settlers arrived.
In the late 1800s, a man named Sumner Wright purchased land in the San Gabriel Mountains and established a cattle ranch. Wright's ranch became known as "Sumner's Camp," attracting other settlers to the area. By 1915, the settlement had grown, and it was officially named "Wrightwood" in honor of its founder.
Wrightwood benefitted from the influx of tourists and vacationers who were drawn to the beautiful scenery and pleasant climate of the region. The opening of the Pacific Electric Railway Big Pines line in 1913 allowed for easier access to the area and boosted tourism further. Many people from the Los Angeles area flocked to Wrightwood to escape the hot summers and enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and fishing.
In the early 1930s, the construction of the Angeles Crest Highway (now State Route 2) provided another transportation option to reach Wrightwood. This scenic highway became popular among motor tourists and improved connectivity to the community.
During World War II, Wrightwood saw a decline in tourism and development due to the redirection of resources towards the war effort. However, after the war, the community began to flourish once again.
In the 1950s, the opening of the Mountain High Ski Resort (originally known as Blue Ridge Ski Area) brought a new industry and additional tourism to Wrightwood. The ski resort attracted visitors from Southern California and beyond, offering skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities.
Over the years, Wrightwood has evolved into a unique mountain community with a blend of rustic charm and modern amenities. It has faced challenges such as wildfires like the 2007 Slide Fire, which threatened the town, and subsequent efforts have been put into improving fire safety measures.
Today, Wrightwood is known for its outdoor recreational opportunities, including skiing, snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, and camping. The town retains its small-town character, attracting visitors and residents who seek a peaceful mountain retreat away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
