Crestline, CA
County: San Bernardino
History
Crestline is a small mountain community located in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. Its history dates back to the mid-1800s when the area was primarily used for logging and mining.
In the 1860s, gold was discovered in the nearby Holcomb Valley, leading to a mining boom in the region. The influx of miners and prospectors created the need for a nearby settlement to support the industry. In 1866, a small community called "Crest City" was established near what is now Crestline. However, mining activity declined in the late 1800s, and the population dwindled.
In the early 1900s, Crestline began to transform into a recreational mountain community. The arrival of the Arrowhead Springs Water Company in 1903 further paved the way for the development of the area. The company constructed a mountain resort and promoted Crestline as a desirable destination for tourists seeking clean mountain air and scenic beauty.
The Crestline Resort, later known as the "Swiss Society," became a popular getaway for visitors from Los Angeles and other nearby cities. Many artists, musicians, and writers also sought inspiration and solace in the natural beauty of Crestline.
During the Prohibition era in the 1920s, Crestline became a popular destination for those seeking to escape the restrictions on alcohol. Speakeasies and hidden drinking spots emerged throughout the area. The village's signature restaurant, the "Stockade," was known for serving alcohol and attracting notable figures of the time.
Crestline continued to grow as a resort town, attracting visitors with its charming mountain scenery and abundant recreational opportunities. Through the years, the community developed more amenities, including stores, restaurants, and lodgings, to accommodate the growing tourist demand.
In recent decades, Crestline has evolved into a mountain community that offers a mix of permanent residents and part-time vacationers. The area's natural beauty, including Lake Gregory, has made it a desirable place to live and visit.
Today, Crestline maintains its small-town charm while providing access to outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, boating, and skiing. The rich history of Crestline, from its early mining and logging days to its transformation into a resort town, is celebrated by locals and appreciated by visitors.
