Sunset Hills, MO
County: St. Louis
History
Sunset Hills is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. Its history can be traced back to the early 19th century when the area was primarily agricultural, with many farmers settling in the region. The city borders the Meramec River to the south, which played a crucial role in its development.
In the mid-20th century, suburban growth started to occur in Sunset Hills, fueled by the expansion of nearby St. Louis. In 1953, a portion of the land that is now Sunset Hills was annexed by the city of Kirkwood, while the remaining area was unincorporated until later on.
It was not until 1958 that residents of the unincorporated area voiced their concerns over proposed development plans, which included industrial zoning. As a result, they organized themselves and successfully petitioned to become a village in 1959. The village was named Sunset Hills, inspired by the beautiful sunsets visible from the elevated areas of the city.
Over the next several years, Sunset Hills experienced continued growth and development. In 1974, it achieved incorporation as a fourth class city under Missouri state law. This allowed the city to establish its own government, including a mayor and city council.
Throughout the decades, Sunset Hills has remained a predominantly residential community with a strong focus on preserving its natural beauty. The city has implemented numerous ordinances and regulations to protect its green spaces, parks, and wooded areas. It has also worked diligently to create a sense of community, organizing events and initiatives to bring residents together.
Today, Sunset Hills is known for its beautiful neighborhoods, quality schools, and excellent recreational facilities. Residents can enjoy a variety of amenities such as parks, golf courses, and shopping centers.
