History

Affton, Missouri

Affton is an unincorporated community in St. Louis County, Missouri. The history of Affton can be traced back to the early 19th century when it was predominantly a farming community. The area was originally settled by German immigrants who were seeking fertile land for agriculture.

Affton was named after the Affleck family, who were prominent landowners in the area. The Affleck brothers, William, Henry, and John, owned a large tract of land encompassing present-day Affton, and they played a significant role in the community's development.

With the construction of the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad in the late 19th century, Affton saw increased growth and development. The railroad connected Affton to downtown St. Louis and other nearby towns, making it easier for farmers to transport their crops to market.

As Affton grew, it began attracting more residents who saw it as an attractive suburban area. In the mid-20th century, after World War II, there was a boom in suburban development across the United States, and Affton experienced significant growth during this time. New housing subdivisions were built, and the population increased.

Over the years, Affton has continued to thrive as a residential community within the larger St. Louis metropolitan area. It is known for its well-established neighborhoods, excellent schools, and a strong sense of community. Though it remains unincorporated, Affton has a civic association, the Affton Community Betterment Association, which works to preserve and improve the community's quality of life.
