History

Pevely, Missouri

Pevely is a city located in Jefferson County, Missouri, in the United States. Its history dates back to the early 19th century when European settlers began to arrive in the area.

The land where Pevely is currently situated was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Osage and the Missouri Indians. In the early 1800s, European-American settlers started to establish homesteads and farms in the region.

One of the early settlers was Martin D. Heater, who arrived in the area in 1799. Heater built the first log cabin in what would later become Pevely. The settlement that grew around his cabin was known as Heater's Station.

In the mid-1800s, the railroad played a significant role in the development of Pevely. The St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway completed a line between St. Louis and Pilot Knob in 1858, passing through the area that would eventually become Pevely. This brought new opportunities for trade and transportation, attracting more settlers to the region.

The town was officially platted in 1860 and named after the daughter of a local landowner, Joseph Pavey. The community initially thrived as a farming town, with many residents engaged in agriculture, particularly dairy farming.

In 1902, Pevely was incorporated as a city. The early 20th century saw the growth of manufacturing and industry in the area, with the establishment of Pevely Dairy Company (later known as the Pet Milk Company) and a glass factory.

Over the years, Pevely has continued to grow and evolve. Today, it has a population of around 5,700 residents and is a suburban community with a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. Despite its growth, the city has managed to retain its small-town charm and historical character.
