History

Festus, Missouri

Festus, Missouri is a city located in Jefferson County, in the eastern central part of the state. It is a suburban city that is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. The history of Festus dates back to the early 19th century.

The area where Festus is situated was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Osage and the Illiniwek. European settlement began in the late 18th century when the Spanish claimed the Louisiana Territory, including present-day Missouri. French explorers and traders were the first Europeans to reach the area.

In the early 19th century, the area attracted settlers from the eastern United States looking for new opportunities. The region was known for its fertile land, rich mineral resources, and proximity to the burgeoning river trade along the Mississippi River. These settlers established farms, mills, and mines, leading to the development of small communities in the area.

One of these communities was known as Tanglefoot, which grew around a stop on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. In 1887, Tanglefoot was renamed Festus after Festus Wade, a railroad official. The establishment of a railroad station played a significant role in the growth and development of the town.

Festus thrived during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a result of its proximity to the lead mining industry. The area was rich in lead deposits, and several mines were established in the region, bringing wealth and job opportunities to Festus. The lead industry remained a major economic force in the town for several decades.

During the 20th century, Festus continued to grow and diversify its economy. The construction of Interstate 55 in the 1960s further boosted the town's accessibility and attracted more businesses and residents. Festus became a popular commuter town for those working in nearby St. Louis.

Today, Festus has a population of around 12,000 and is known for its strong community spirit, excellent schools, and convenient access to urban amenities. The city has preserved some of its historic architecture and maintains a charming downtown area. Festus also hosts several community events and celebrations throughout the year, showcasing its rich history and vibrant culture.
