History

Woodbury, New York

Woodbury, New York is a town located in Nassau County on Long Island. Its history dates back to the 17th century when European settlers began to colonize the area. Originally inhabited by the Lenape Native American tribe, the land was purchased by Englishman Robert Williams in 1663 from the Matinecock tribe.

Early settlers turned the area into an agricultural community, primarily farming potatoes. The town was originally known as "Woodbury West." In the late 18th century, Woodbury West was split into two different townships: Oyster Bay and Huntington. It wasn't until 1854 that the area officially became the town of Woodbury, named after Timothy Wood, a prominent resident and local postmaster.

Woodbury remained primarily an agricultural community until the mid-20th century when suburban development began to flourish on Long Island. In the 1950s, post-war housing demand led to an increase in residential development in Woodbury, and farmland was gradually transformed into suburban neighborhoods.

Today, Woodbury is a suburban town known for its affluent residential communities, excellent schools, and beautiful parks. Its convenient location, with access to major highways and transportation, has made it an attractive place for families and professionals. Woodbury also boasts a vibrant business district with numerous shopping centers and professional offices.

Notable landmarks in Woodbury include the historic Old Bethpage Village Restoration, a living history museum that replicates a 19th-century Long Island farming village. The town is also home to several parks, such as Woodbury Community Park and Syosset-Woodbury Park, offering recreational opportunities including sports fields, playgrounds, and walking trails.

Woodbury has come a long way from its agricultural roots and has developed into a thriving suburban community while preserving its historical significance.
