Willowbrook, IL
County: DuPage
History
Willowbrook, Illinois is a suburb located in DuPage County. The area that is now Willowbrook was originally settled by European pioneers in the early 19th century. The first known settler was Asa Hammonds who in 1818 established a farm near the present-day intersection of Route 83 and 63rd Street.
Over the years, the community grew slowly, mainly consisting of farms and rural establishments. The arrival of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad in 1862 provided access to the region, leading to an increase in agricultural and commercial activity.
In 1890, the Foster family, who were prominent Chicago industrialists, purchased a large tract of land in the area and began developing it as an upscale community. It was named Willow Brook Farm which later became the namesake for the village. Willowbrook officially became incorporated as a village on December 20, 1960.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Willowbrook experienced significant growth as suburbanization swept across the Chicago metropolitan area. The nearby expressways, particularly the construction of Interstate 55, facilitated easier access to the suburb. This, along with affordable housing and proximity to Chicago, contributed to the influx of residents.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Willowbrook faced some environmental challenges. The discovery of toxic waste dumped by a company called Electro-Refining and Disposal (ERD) attracted attention and concern from local residents. The contamination of the groundwater led to a long legal battle and heightened environmental awareness in the community.
Today, Willowbrook has become an established residential suburb with a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. It is known for its pleasant neighborhoods, open spaces, and convenient access to the city of Chicago. The village has also introduced several community initiatives and programs to enhance the quality of life for its residents.
Overall, Willowbrook's history reflects its transformation from a rural farming community to a thriving suburban village, adapting to the changing times while preserving its unique character.
