History
Willoughby Hills is a small city located in Lake County, Ohio. The area that is now Willoughby Hills was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, most notably the Erie tribe, before European settlement. The land was part of the Western Reserve, a region in northeastern Ohio that was reserved for settlement by citizens of Connecticut.
The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 19th century, with the founding of Willoughby Township in 1833. The township was named after Dr. Westel Willoughby, a Connecticut physician and surveyor who purchased land in the area. Initially, Willoughby Township encompassed a larger area than the present-day city of Willoughby Hills.
Agriculture was the primary industry in the early years of Willoughby Township, as settlers utilized the fertile land for farming and livestock raising. The community gradually grew, and by the late 19th century, a few small businesses and schools had been established.
In 1960, Willoughby Township was divided into two separate entities – Willoughby and Willoughby Hills. This division occurred due to the growth of the area and the desire for more localized governance. Willoughby Hills officially became a city in 1970.

The city has diversified its economy beyond agriculture and attracted various industries and businesses. It is also known for its residential neighborhoods and recreational spaces, including parks and golf courses.
