History

West Loch Estate, Hawaii

West Loch Estate is a neighborhood located in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. The area was originally a sugar plantation known as the Honouliuli Sugar Plantation.

In the late 1800s, the plantation was established by Benjamin Dillingham, a businessman and entrepreneur who played a significant role in the development of transportation infrastructure in Hawaii. Dillingham named the plantation Honouliuli, after the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The plantation thrived for several decades, with sugar cane being the primary crop. It employed a large number of workers, including many immigrants from various countries, such as Japan, China, Portugal, and the Philippines. These laborers lived in camps on the plantation, and the community grew around them.

In the 1940s, World War II brought significant changes to the area. In 1941, the US military established several military facilities on the island of Oahu, including the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and the West Loch Naval Ammunition Depot. West Loch Estate, which was located near these facilities, became a residential area for military personnel.

On May 21, 1944, a tragic event occurred when a fire broke out on Landing Ship Dock (LSD) 60, causing a massive explosion at the West Loch Naval Ammunition Depot. The explosion resulted in the deaths of 163 people and the destruction of several ships. The event, known as the West Loch Disaster, had a significant impact on the area and the people living there.

After the war, the military facilities were decommissioned, and the land was returned to the local community. The former military housing in West Loch Estate was converted into civilian residences, and the area continued to develop as a residential neighborhood.

Today, West Loch Estate is a peaceful and vibrant community, offering a mix of suburban and rural living. It is home to schools, parks, shopping centers, and other amenities that cater to the needs of its residents. The area still holds a memorial for the victims of the West Loch Disaster, reminding residents and visitors of the tragic event that occurred in its history.
