West Dundee, IL
County: Kane
History
West Dundee, Illinois is a village located in Kane County, in the northeastern part of the state. Its history dates back to the early 19th century when European settlers began to arrive in the area.
The first known European settlers in what is now West Dundee were the Scott and Miller families, who arrived in the late 1830s. They established farms and gradually more settlers followed suit. The village's name, "Dundee," originated from the Scottish city of Dundee, as many early settlers were of Scottish and Irish descent.
In 1837, a man named Elias Gilbert purchased land near the Fox River and platted the village of "East Dundee." This area became the east side of present-day West Dundee. East Dundee quickly grew, aided by its proximity to the river, which provided waterpower for mills and factories.
In 1850, another settler named Gilbert F. Sherman, along with investors, began developing the west side of the river. They formed the "Gilbert & Sherman Company" and established a new village named "West Dundee," which eventually incorporated as a separate municipality in 1877.
As West Dundee continued to grow, various industries contributed to its economy. Flour and woolen mills, a sash and door factory, and a watch factory were among the early businesses that flourished in the village. The Elgin, Joliet, and Eastern Railway also ran through West Dundee, providing transportation opportunities.
Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, West Dundee continued to develop as a small, industrial village. However, as the economy shifted and many of the factories closed, the village's focus shifted towards becoming a residential community.
In recent years, West Dundee has experienced revitalization efforts, particularly in its historic downtown area, known as the "Dundee Historic District." Many of the older buildings have been preserved, and the district is now home to various shops, restaurants, and galleries. This area continues to attract both residents and visitors, promoting a sense of community and historic significance.
Today, West Dundee prides itself on its small-town charm, preserved history, and community events. The village has managed to maintain its unique character while adapting to the changing times, ensuring a promising future for this historic Illinois town.
