Shady Side, MD
County: Anne Arundel
History
Shady Side is a small waterfront community located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. Its history dates back to the 17th century when it was initially settled by Europeans.
The area was originally inhabited by the Algonquin Native American tribes who fished and hunted along the Chesapeake Bay. The first European settlement in the region was established in the mid-1600s by English colonists who sought to establish tobacco plantations. The land of present-day Shady Side was part of a larger land grant given to one of these colonists, Captain John Smith (not to be confused with the famous explorer with the same name), in 1662.
Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Shady Side continued to develop as a rural community centered around agriculture, particularly tobacco farming. The community grew with the establishment of small farms, as well as fishing and oystering industries due to the proximity to the Chesapeake Bay.
In the late 19th century, an influx of summer visitors from nearby cities like Baltimore and Washington, D.C., began to arrive seeking relief from the heat. This led to the development of summer homes and resorts, as well as recreational activities along the waterfront. These visitors, along with the increase in transportation infrastructure such as steamship lines and railroads, helped to further establish Shady Side as a desirable destination.
During the mid-20th century, Shady Side experienced significant changes due to suburbanization. New residential communities were built, and the population gradually shifted from farming and fishing to a more suburban lifestyle. However, the area has managed to maintain much of its rural, waterfront charm despite increasing development.
Today, Shady Side remains a tight-knit community with a mix of residential, recreational, and agricultural activities. It is known for its beautiful scenic views, boating opportunities, and seafood industry. Many residents and visitors are attracted to its quaint maritime character and the sense of community that has been preserved throughout its history.
