History

Laughlin, Nevada

Laughlin is a small town located in Clark County, Nevada, along the banks of the Colorado River. The town is named after Don Laughlin, an entrepreneur who established the first casino-resort in the area in 1966.

Before Laughlin became a tourist destination, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Mojave and the Chemehuevi. European explorers and trappers also visited the area in the 19th century. However, it was not until the construction of Davis Dam in the 1950s that the area began to be developed.

Davis Dam, completed in 1953, helped control the flow of the Colorado River and facilitated the creation of Lake Mohave, a reservoir. The building of the dam brought an influx of workers to the region, and as a result, a small settlement called South Pointe formed. South Pointe consisted mainly of mobile homes and trailers.

In 1964, Don Laughlin, a Las Vegas entrepreneur and owner of the 101 Club in Nevada, flew over the area in his private plane. He saw an opportunity to create an entertainment destination and purchased property along the river. Laughlin bought the South Pointe property, a motel, and a small casino, thus beginning the development of the town.

By 1966, Don Laughlin had completed construction on the Riverside Resort Hotel & Casino, which included a hotel, casino, and various entertainment amenities. The Riverside Resort became the first casino-resort in Laughlin and played a significant role in attracting tourists to the area.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Laughlin grew as more investors and developers recognized the potential of the town as a destination for gambling and entertainment. The town expanded with the construction of several other hotel-casino resorts, such as the Edgewater Hotel & Casino and the Golden Nugget Laughlin.

Laughlin's location on the Nevada-Arizona border made it particularly appealing to visitors from both states, as well as nearby California. Its proximity to the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon also added to its appeal as a tourist destination.

Today, Laughlin is known for its casino-resorts, offering gambling, live entertainment, and a variety of outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, and hiking. The town continues to attract visitors from across the United States who are looking for a more relaxed and affordable alternative to Las Vegas.
