The history of Idyllwild-Pine Cove dates back thousands of years, as it was once home to Native American tribes, including the Cahuilla people. They inhabited the area and relied on the abundant natural resources for sustenance and shelter.
In the late 1800s, the region began to attract settlers due to its cooler climate and scenic surroundings. In the 1880s, a group of Methodist ministers purchased land in the area to establish a summer retreat and camping ground. They called it Camp Lindley, which later became known as Idyllwild.
The arrival of the railroad in nearby Hemet in 1888 and the construction of a toll road up the mountain in 1891 further facilitated the development of the area. Idyllwild became a popular destination for tourists seeking respite from the heat of the lowlands.
Throughout the early 20th century, Idyllwild continued to grow and attract visitors. In 1920, a mountain school, now known as Idyllwild School of Music and Arts, was established, which played a significant role in the area's artistic and cultural development.
