Fairlawn, OH
County: Summit
History
Fairlawn, Ohio is a city located in Summit County in northeastern Ohio. It was originally a part of the larger Bath Township but was officially incorporated as a city in 1960. The history of Fairlawn dates back to the early 19th century when it was settled by European immigrants.
The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Mingo and Wyandot peoples, before the arrival of European settlers. The first European immigrants to the area arrived in the early 19th century, mostly of German descent, and began establishing farms and homesteads.
One of the first major developments in Fairlawn's history was the building of the Ohio & Erie Canal in the mid-19th century. The canal served as an important transportation route and brought economic growth to the region. Fairlawn, then known as "South Hametown," benefited from the canal by providing supplies and services to the workers and travelers passing through the area.
However, the decline of the canal and the rise of the railroads in the late 19th century shifted the economic center of the region, leading to a decline in Fairlawn's population and development.
In the early 20th century, with the emergence of the rubber industry in nearby Akron, Fairlawn experienced some growth, as many workers from Akron settled in the area. However, it was not until the suburban boom of the 1950s and 1960s that Fairlawn saw significant growth and development.
The growth of Fairlawn was largely fueled by its proximity to Akron and its access to major highways, such as Interstate 77. As Akron's economy boomed, Fairlawn became an appealing location for families looking to live in a suburban setting while still having easy access to Akron's employment opportunities.
Fairlawn continued to grow and prosper throughout the latter half of the 20th century and into the 21st century. Today, it is known as a thriving suburban community with a strong emphasis on commercial development, boasting a wide array of shopping centers and businesses.
In recent years, Fairlawn has also prioritized environmental sustainability. The city has implemented various green initiatives, such as installing solar panels on city buildings and promoting recycling programs, in an effort to reduce its environmental impact.
The history of Fairlawn, Ohio, reflects its transformation from a rural farming community to a bustling suburban city that continues to thrive and evolve.
