Cactus, TX
County: Moore
History
Cactus is a small town located in Moore County, Texas, in the United States. The town was named after the nearby Cactus Creek, which was named for the cacti that grow in the area.
Cactus was established in 1926 as a company town by the American Beet Sugar Company. The company had previously built sugar factories in Nebraska and Colorado and chose Cactus as the site for their newest facility due to its ideal growing conditions for sugar beets.
The town was designed to provide housing and facilities for the workers and their families. It had houses, schools, a hospital, a church, a theater, and other amenities, creating a self-contained community. The American Beet Sugar Company provided jobs to hundreds of workers, mainly immigrants from Mexico and Europe.
During the 1940s and 1950s, Cactus experienced a boom as the demand for sugar increased during World War II and the following years. However, in the late 1950s, the sugar company closed its operations in Cactus due to economic reasons. This caused a decline in the town's population and economy.
In the 1970s, a new Industry, the JBS USA beef-processing plant, was established in Cactus. This brought a new wave of immigrants, mainly from Latin American countries, who were employed by the plant. The JBS USA plant became one of the largest employers in the region and played a significant role in the town's economy.
Today, Cactus remains a small town with a population of around 3,100. It is primarily known for its agricultural and industrial activities, including cattle ranching, farming, and the JBS USA beef-processing plant. The town continues to provide housing and services for its residents and remains an important part of Moore County, Texas.
