Barrington Hills, IL
County: Cook
History
Barrington Hills, Illinois is a village located about 40 miles northwest of Chicago. The area that is now Barrington Hills was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi, Fox, and Sauk people. The first known European settlers arrived in the 1830s, primarily from the Eastern United States.
In the mid-1800s, small farming communities began to develop in the area. One of the earliest settlers, named Dr. Thomas Garver, built a large estate and named it Barrington Hills. The name "Barrington" is said to have come from the town of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where Dr. Garver had previously resided. The area around Barrington Hills was known for its rich soil and abundance of natural resources, attracting more settlers over time.
In the late 19th century, the village of Barrington Hills experienced significant growth and development. Many affluent Chicago residents built large country estates in the area, attracted by the natural beauty and tranquility of the countryside. This led to the establishment of large, picturesque properties and equestrian farms that are still a defining characteristic of Barrington Hills today.
In 1957, Barrington Hills officially became a village, separating from the neighboring villages of Barrington and Hoffman Estates. The newly incorporated village adopted strict zoning regulations to preserve its rural and equestrian character. Barrington Hills has since maintained a commitment to preserving its open spaces, natural beauty, and equestrian culture.
Today, Barrington Hills is known for its expansive estates, rolling hills, and horse farms. It offers a rich quality of life with its quiet and rural setting, yet is still within close proximity to the amenities of suburban Chicago. The village continues to prioritize preservation efforts, such as maintaining large minimum lot sizes and extensive open space requirements, to safeguard its rural feel and environment.
