Zelienople, PA
County: Butler
History
Zelienople is a borough located in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The town was founded in 1802 by German immigrants Dettmar Basse and John Berger, who purchased land from Christopher Francis, the son of a Lenape Indian chief. They named the town "Zelienople" after Basse's daughter, Zelie.
Originally, Zelienople was planned as a farming community, and the land was divided into lots for sale. The town quickly grew, attracting more settlers, primarily from Germany. The Harmony Society, a communal religious group led by George Rapp, also settled in the area in the early 1800s. They built a successful community named "Harmony" adjacent to Zelienople.
During the mid-19th century, Zelienople prospered due to its location along the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway, which brought new opportunities for trade and transportation. The town saw the establishment of industries such as sawmills, gristmills, and tanneries, contributing to its economic growth.
In 1825, Dettmar Basse's son, Philipp, laid out the town plan and streets, which remain largely unchanged to this day. Many of the original buildings constructed during this period still stand and contribute to Zelienople's architectural charm.
In 1880, Zelienople experienced significant growth with the establishment of the Zelienople Chair Company, a manufacturer of wooden furniture. The company's success transformed the town into a major furniture manufacturing center, bringing employment opportunities for local residents.
Zelienople's history is also closely tied to its neighboring town, Harmony. The Harmony Society dissolved in the 1900s, and their properties were sold, including many to the Buhl Foundation. The Buhl family played a significant role in preserving the historic character of both towns and supporting local development.
In recent years, Zelienople has focused on preserving its historical heritage while attracting visitors and residents. The town boasts a variety of charming shops, restaurants, and bed-and-breakfast establishments. Events such as the Harmony Zelienople Art Walk and the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival draw people from the region.
Today, Zelienople serves as a quaint historic community with a rich heritage, preserving its past while embracing modern opportunities.
