Zachary, LA
County: East Baton Rouge
History
Zachary, Louisiana is a small city located in East Baton Rouge Parish. It has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century.
Originally, the area where Zachary now stands was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Houma and Choctaw peoples. European settlement began in the early 1800s, with families and individuals establishing homesteads in the region. The community was initially known as "Zacharie's Settlement."
The city's namesake, Zachary Taylor, played a significant role in its history. Taylor was a military leader who later became the twelfth President of the United States. In the 1840s, Taylor purchased land in the area, where he planned to create a summer residence. However, he died before realizing his dream.
After Taylor's death, his son sold the land to David M. Zachary, a New Orleans businessman, who divided the property into individual lots and sold them to settlers, leading to the development of a proper town. Zachary was officially incorporated as a city in 1889.
In the early years, Zachary primarily relied on agriculture, specifically cotton, for its economic growth. As transportation improved with the arrival of the railroad in 1883, the city thrived as a hub for the surrounding agricultural communities. The timber and lumber industry also played a significant role in the local economy.
Over time, Zachary continued to grow and diversify its industries. Manufacturing and construction sectors emerged, and the city became home to various companies. In recent years, the area has seen significant commercial and residential development, with a thriving business community.
In terms of culture and heritage, Zachary has preserved its historical charm. Many historic sites and buildings remain, including the Historical Village at the Zachary Railroad Depot, which showcases the city's history through a collection of restored historic structures.
