History

Wind Lake, Wisconsin

Wind Lake is a small, unincorporated community located in Racine County, Wisconsin. It is situated approximately 23 miles southwest of Milwaukee and 8 miles north of Waterford. The community gets its name from the small lake, also called Wind Lake, that is located in the area.

The history of Wind Lake begins in the mid-19th century. The land surrounding the lake was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi and the Menominee. However, after the Treaty of Chicago in 1833, which forced many Native American tribes to relocate west of the Mississippi River, the area was opened up for settlement by European settlers.

In the 1840s, pioneers began to arrive in the area, attracted by the fertile land and natural resources. They established farms and began cultivating the land. The advent of the railroad in the late 19th century brought further development to the region, connecting Wind Lake to the growing industrial cities nearby.

The community continued to grow throughout the early 20th century. Wind Lake became a popular recreational destination, attracting visitors who were drawn to the beauty of the lake and surrounding natural areas. Many cottages and summer homes were built along the lake's shores, and boating, fishing, and swimming became popular pastimes.

In the 1920s, Wind Lake became known as a center for aviation. The Racine Airport, now known as the Batten International Airport, was established in the region. Several aviation pioneers, including Walter J. Kohler Sr. and Royal Little, had personal airstrips in the area. Today, the airport remains an important transportation hub for the community.

Wind Lake remains a close-knit, rural community to this day. Its residents enjoy the peaceful charm of the area, as well as the recreational opportunities provided by the lake and surrounding natural areas. Despite its small size, Wind Lake continues to attract both visitors and new residents who appreciate the beauty and history of the area.
