History
Williamsburg is an unincorporated community located in Orange County, Florida, United States. The history of Williamsburg dates back to the 1960s when it was developed as a planned residential community.
In the early 1960s, a company called Coral Gables-based Rich Devos Group, which was owned by Richard M. Devos, Sr., a co-founder of Amway Corporation, purchased 2,600 acres of land in what is now Williamsburg. The area was primarily a swamp with dense vegetation and was known as the Calhoun Basin. The company planned to build a master-planned community that would cater to retirees and senior citizens.
Construction of the community began in 1963, and the first homes in Williamsburg were completed in 1964. The development featured single-family homes, condominiums, and a variety of recreational facilities, including golf courses, swimming pools, and clubhouses. The community was designed to provide a high quality of life for its residents, with an emphasis on amenities and services.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Williamsburg experienced substantial growth as more homes were built and new residents moved in. The community became particularly popular among retirees from the Midwest and Northeast seeking a warmer climate and a relaxed lifestyle.
Williamsburg remained a primarily residential community, but in the following decades, commercial development began to increase in the surrounding areas. This led to the establishment of shopping centers, restaurants, and other amenities close to the community, providing convenience to its residents.
Today, Williamsburg is an established community with a diverse population that includes both retirees and families. The community continues to offer a range of amenities, including golf courses, parks, and recreational facilities. It is conveniently located near major highways and is within close proximity to attractions such as SeaWorld Orlando, Universal Orlando Resort, and Walt Disney World.
