History
West Point is a small city located in Cuming County, northeastern Nebraska, United States. The history of West Point dates back to the early 1850s when European settlers began arriving in the area. The Sioux Native American tribe had previously inhabited the land.
In 1853, the U.S. Government established the Fontenelle Indian Agency near present-day West Point to oversee relations with the native tribes in the region. This agency helped facilitate peaceful interactions between the settlers and Native Americans.
The town of West Point was officially founded in September 1857 by a group of German settlers led by Bernhard Cruze. They established the settlement on a high bluff overlooking the Elkhorn River, which provided transportation and trade opportunities.
The original name of the town was Denver, named after the governor of the Kansas Territory, James W. Denver. However, the name was changed to West Point in 1864 to honor the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. The name change was intended to attract more settlers and businesses to the area.
Throughout its history, agriculture has played a significant role in West Point's development. The fertile land of the region made it an ideal location for farming, and many settlers established successful agricultural enterprises, primarily focused on grain and livestock production.
In 1881, West Point was chosen as the county seat of Cuming County, further boosting its economic and political importance. The arrival of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway in 1886 further bolstered the town's growth.
Over the years, West Point witnessed various improvements and developments. Churches, schools, and other important community facilities emerged, providing essential services to the residents. The city also embraced modern amenities, including electricity, telephone services, and paved roads.
The population of West Point grew steadily throughout the 20th century. Today, it is home to around 3,300 residents and continues to be an agricultural center in Cuming County. The city celebrates its German heritage with events like the annual West Point GermanFest, which attracts visitors from around the region.
West Point has evolved from its early days as a small settlement to become a thriving city, maintaining its roots in agriculture while adapting to the changing needs of its residents.
