History

West Haven-Sylvan, Oregon

West Haven-Sylvan is an unincorporated community located in Washington County, Oregon. The area was initially inhabited by the Atfalati Indians, a tribe of the Kalapuya people, who resided in the Tualatin Valley for thousands of years.

In the 1840s, European settlers arrived in the region, attracted by the fertile land and ample natural resources. Early settlements were established along the Tualatin River, and farming became the primary occupation of the area. The community that would eventually become West Haven-Sylvan was primarily farmland, dotted with small homesteads.

In the late 19th century, the Portland and Willamette Valley Railway was constructed, passing through the area. This led to increased transportation and connectivity, making it easier for farmers to export their goods to the growing city of Portland.

The name "West Haven" originated in the early 1900s when a local developer, Fred Wilbur, subdivided the area into small lots. He named it West Haven to appeal to potential buyers, emphasizing the proximity to the city of Portland. The name "Sylvan" was added later to distinguish it from other similarly named communities.

Throughout the 20th century, West Haven-Sylvan saw significant development and growth. As Portland's population expanded, the community transformed from primarily farmland to a suburban area. Residential neighborhoods were established, attracting new residents seeking a quieter life outside the city.

Today, West Haven-Sylvan is a vibrant residential community with a mix of single-family homes and larger estates. It offers a suburban lifestyle while still being close to the amenities and opportunities of Portland. The area is known for its natural beauty, with many parks and green spaces offering recreational opportunities for residents. Despite being unincorporated, West Haven-Sylvan has its own community organization that works to address local concerns and promote a sense of community.
