History

West Frankfort, Illinois

West Frankfort is a city located in Franklin County, Illinois. Its history begins in the early 19th century when the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, mainly the Shawnee.

The first permanent white settlers arrived in the area in the 1830s, attracted by the region's fertile soil and the presence of coal deposits. These settlers mainly engaged in agriculture and coal mining, becoming the foundation of the town's early economy.

In 1854, the town was officially established as Frankfort City and incorporated as a village in 1882. The name was later changed to West Frankfort to avoid confusion with another town named Frankfort in Illinois.

Coal mining played a vital role in the development of West Frankfort. The town's first mine opened in 1904, and by the 1920s, the coal industry was booming, attracting numerous miners to the area. The population of West Frankfort grew rapidly during this time, reaching around 20,000 by the 1930s.

However, the coal industry also brought hardships to West Frankfort. Tragic events, such as the 1906 explosion at the Orient No. 2 mine, which claimed the lives of 119 miners, and the 1951 Orient No. 2 mine disaster, where 119 miners were also killed, had a profound impact on the town and its residents.

Despite these challenges, West Frankfort continued to grow and diversify its economy. The town became a hub for retail and commerce in southern Illinois, attracting businesses and providing services to the surrounding agricultural communities.

Over the years, West Frankfort has witnessed various changes and developments. The decline of the coal industry and the automation of mining operations in the late 20th century led to a decline in population. However, the town has adapted and diversified its economy, focusing on healthcare, education, and manufacturing sectors.

Today, West Frankfort is a close-knit community with a population of around 8,000 residents. It celebrates its coal mining heritage through events like the Old King Coal Festival and remains an important center for commerce and services in Franklin County.
