History

Wadena is a city located in Wadena County, Minnesota. Its history dates back to the late 19th century when European settlers arrived in the region.

The area where Wadena is situated was originally inhabited by the Ojibwe tribe. The first European contact in the area occurred in the late 18th century when French fur traders explored the nearby region. However, permanent European settlement didn't occur until the late 19th century.

Wadena was platted in 1871, and the city was officially incorporated on August 23, 1876. The city's name, Wadena, comes from the Ojibwe word "waadina," which means "to dawn" or "start of a new day."

The arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1872 greatly contributed to the growth of Wadena. The railroad provided a means for transporting people and goods to and from the city, fostering economic development and attracting new settlers.

In the early 1900s, Wadena experienced significant growth and development. It became a trade center for the surrounding agricultural region, with businesses, banks, a hospital, schools, and other essential services being established.

Tragedy struck Wadena in 1894 when a devastating fire swept through the city, destroying much of the downtown area. However, the community showed resilience and quickly rebuilt the city.
