Vinita, OK is a city located in Craig County, Oklahoma, United States. It has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. The area that is now Vinita was initially settled by the Cherokee Nation after their forced removal from the southeastern United States along the Trail of Tears in the 1830s.

In 1871, a trading post named Downingville was established on the banks of the Grand River by a Cherokee man named John Vann. The post served as a trading hub for the surrounding communities. Shortly after, in 1872, a railway line was constructed through the area by the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad Company, and a townsite was created nearby. The town was initially named "Jimtown" or "Jimmie's Town" after James R. Vann, who was a prominent early settler and son of John Vann.

In 1879, the name of the town was changed to Vinita in honor of John Vann, who had been murdered by a group of outlaws. Vinita became the first town in the Indian Territory to be incorporated.
