Vernon, WI
County: Waukesha
History
Vernon is a village located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The village was established in 1841 by European settlers who migrated from New York and the eastern United States. The early settlers were mainly of German, Irish, and English descent.
The village was originally called Frog Station and was named after the frogs that were abundant in the nearby wetlands. It was primarily an agricultural area, with farming being the main occupation of the settlers. The fertile soil and water resources available in the area made it ideal for farming.
As the village grew, it attracted more settlers, and by the late 19th century, it had several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a school. The arrival of the railroad in 1885 further contributed to the growth of the village, allowing for easier transportation of goods and increased trade.
In the early 20th century, Vernon continued to develop, with the establishment of additional businesses and amenities. The village had its own post office, several churches, and a town hall. However, the Great Depression of the 1930s had a significant impact on Vernon, as it did on the rest of the country. Many businesses closed, and the population declined.
After World War II, Vernon experienced a resurgence as the economy recovered. Suburbanization in the mid-20th century led to an increase in residential developments in the area, as people sought to live in more rural settings while still having access to urban amenities.
Today, Vernon is a peaceful and picturesque village. It remains predominantly rural, with a mix of farms, open spaces, and residential areas. Despite its small size, Vernon continues to attract new residents who appreciate its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. The village remains proud of its agricultural heritage and works to preserve its rural character.
