History
Timberlake, Virginia is a small unincorporated community located in Campbell County. The community is situated about 8 miles northwest of Lynchburg, the nearest city.
The history of Timberlake can be traced back to the colonial era when European settlers began to explore and settle the region in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Monacan and Saponi peoples, who had lived there for thousands of years.
In the early 1800s, as the surrounding region began to develop economically, a village called Union Hill grew up in the area that is now known as Timberlake. The village served as a trading center for local farmers, with a general store, post office, and a few houses. The village was later renamed Timberlake, after the local Timberlake family.
One of the critical factors contributing to the development of Timberlake was the establishment of a railroad line through the community in the late 19th century. The Lynchburg and Durham Railroad, later known as the Durham and Southern Railway, extended its tracks through Timberlake, connecting the area to Lynchburg and other nearby cities. This railway facilitated the transportation of goods and people, providing a significant boost to the community's growth.
Throughout the 20th century, Timberlake continued to develop as a residential and commercial area. With its proximity to Lynchburg and the convenience of the nearby railway line, Timberlake became an attractive place for people to live and commute to work. Subdivisions and businesses began to spring up in the community, leading to a steady increase in population.
Today, Timberlake remains a vibrant and close-knit community in Campbell County. It offers a mix of residential neighborhoods, small businesses, and local services. The area's history is still evident in the older homes and buildings that dot the landscape, preserving its unique charm and character.
