Three Lakes traces its history back to the early 20th century when the land was mostly undeveloped swampland. In the 1920s, a massive drainage project known as the Miami Canal was initiated to reclaim the area for agricultural and residential use. This project involved digging canals and building levees to control water levels and flood protection.
In the 1940s and 1950s, war veterans returning to the Miami area sought affordable housing and found opportunities in the newly drained lands of Three Lakes. Many small homes and trailers were built, and families began to settle in the area. Initially, the community was predominantly rural and agricultural, with residents engaging in farming, cattle raising, and growing tropical fruits.
As Miami's urban development expanded in the subsequent decades, Three Lakes experienced significant growth and transformation. The area became more suburban, with the development of residential communities, shopping centers, schools, and other amenities to accommodate the increasing population. As a result, Three Lakes saw an influx of new residents attracted to the suburban lifestyle and proximity to Miami.
The lakes and canals that gave Three Lakes its name have also become significant features of the community. Many homes are situated along the waterfront, offering boating and fishing opportunities. These natural water bodies also contribute to the area's scenic beauty and recreational activities.
Today, Three Lakes continues to be a diverse and vibrant community. It offers a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational opportunities, making it an attractive place to live for those seeking a suburban lifestyle within close proximity to Miami.
