History
Tavares, Florida is a city located in Lake County, about 35 miles northwest of Orlando. The area where Tavares now stands has a rich history that dates back to the pre-Columbian period.
Before European settlers arrived in the region, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily from the Timucua and Creek nations. These tribes often used Lake Dora, one of the lakes in the area, as a central gathering place.
In the late 18th century, European settlers began to move into what is now Tavares. The first permanent settlement was established in 1868 by Alexander St. Clair-Abrams, who built a small wooden house near Lake Dora. This settlement became known as St. Clair-Abrams Landing.
Around the same time, the area caught the attention of Captain Melton Haynes Tavares, a riverboat captain who had sailed on the Ocklawaha River. He recognized the potential of the region due to its proximity to several lakes, connecting waterways, and the Florida Railroad. Tavares bought some land and founded the town of Tavares on July 4, 1880. He hoped to develop the area into a transportation hub and shipping center.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Tavares experienced rapid growth. The town's proximity to Lake Dora attracted tourists and the citrus industry became a significant economic factor. Steamboat transportation was prominent, connecting Tavares to other towns and cities around the lakes.
In 1887, Tavares became the county seat of Lake County, a title which it still holds today. The construction of the Lake County Courthouse in Tavares in 1922 further solidified its role as the administrative and governmental center of the county.
However, the construction of highways and the decline of steamboat travel in the mid-20th century led to a decline in Tavares' prominence. The city remained relatively quiet for several decades.
In recent years, Tavares has experienced a revitalization. It has capitalized on its central location in the state of Florida and its access to the Harris Chain of Lakes to attract tourists and residents. The city has focused on fostering a vibrant downtown with restaurants, shops, and recreational activities. Tavares is often referred to as "America's Seaplane City" due to its seaplane base on Lake Dora, which attracts aviation enthusiasts from around the country.
Today, Tavares is a thriving community with a population of around 16,000. It continues to preserve its historical heritage while embracing modern development, making it a unique and charming city in Central Florida.
