Tanque Verde, AZ
County: Pima
History
Tanque Verde, Arizona is a small community located in Pima County, in the southeastern part of the state. Its history can be traced back to the mid-19th century when the area was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Gila River and Sobaipuri-O'odham people.
In the 1860s, the region began to see an influx of European settlers with the establishment of Fort Lowell, a military outpost built by the U.S. Army during the Apache Wars. The fort played a crucial role in protecting the nearby settlements and providing support to settlers. The presence of Fort Lowell helped promote growth and development in the area.
The name "Tanque Verde" dates back to this time, with "Tanque" referring to a watering hole or small reservoir, and "Verde" meaning green in Spanish. The area had rich vegetation, thanks to the presence of the Tanque Verde Wash, which provided water to the region's agriculture.
After the Apache Wars ended in the late 19th century, and with the completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the area, Tanque Verde saw further settlement and development. Agriculture became a major industry in the area, with farmers cultivating crops such as citrus fruits, cotton, and vegetables. Cattle ranching also played a significant role in the local economy.
In the 20th century, Tanque Verde experienced gradual urbanization and became a desirable residential community due to its scenic beauty, proximity to the city of Tucson, and its rural atmosphere. The community has managed to maintain a balance between preserving its natural surroundings and embracing modern amenities.
Today, Tanque Verde is known for its picturesque landscapes, outdoor recreational opportunities, and diverse wildlife. It has become a popular location for horseback riding, hiking, and birdwatching, with the nearby Sabino Canyon and Saguaro National Park providing ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.
While Tanque Verde has changed over the years, it still retains its unique history and charm as a rural community that has adapted to the demands of the modern world while preserving its natural beauty.
