St. Marys, PA
County: Elk
History
St. Marys is a borough located in Elk County, Pennsylvania. The history of the town can be traced back to the early 1800s when the first settlers arrived in the area. The town was originally named Marienstadt (Mary's City) by the German Catholic immigrants who founded it.
In 1842, a group of Bavarian craftsmen, led by Michael Braun, settled in the area. They established a glass factory known as Straub Glass and started producing glassware, including flint glass, window glass, and various bottles. The glass factory brought economic growth and attracted more settlers to the region.
The town's name was eventually changed to St. Marys in 1843 after a petition was submitted to the state legislature. The reason for the name change is unclear, but it is believed that it was done to honor the Virgin Mary or to pay homage to the settlers' Bavarian origins.
In 1864, St. Marys became the county seat of Elk County. The establishment of the courthouse and county offices further solidified its status as a growing town in the region.
Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, St. Marys experienced industrial growth and diversification. Alongside the glass industry, the town saw the rise of lumber mills, brick factories, breweries, and tanneries. These industries provided employment opportunities and contributed to the town's economy.
St. Marys continued to grow and thrive over the years. The town's Catholic heritage has remained an integral part of its identity, with several Catholic churches and educational institutions established in the area.
Today, St. Marys is a small yet vibrant community known for its picturesque landscapes, outdoor recreational opportunities, and historical sites. The town offers a mix of modern amenities and a rich historical legacy that attracts visitors and residents alike.
