Silverthorne is a town located in Summit County, Colorado, in the United States. The area where Silverthorne is situated was historically inhabited by Ute Native American tribes. The Utes utilized the region for hunting, fishing, and gathering resources.

The European settlement in the area began in the 19th century when prospectors arrived in search of valuable minerals such as gold and silver. In the 1860s, miners established the town of Hamilton, which was located near present-day Silverthorne. However, the mining activity in the area was short-lived, and by the early 1880s, most of the mining communities in the region had diminished.

In 1881, Judge Marshal Silverthorn, along with his sons, staked a claim in the area now known as Silverthorne. They were attracted by the possibilities of mining in the region. However, just like the previous mining attempts, their venture had limited success.

Over the years, the land in and around Silverthorne went through various ownership changes, and most of the town remained undeveloped until the 1950s. In 1958, the newly-formed Continental Divide Corporation acquired the land. They envisioned turning the area into a ski resort called "Silverthorne," a name derived from Judge Marshal Silverthorn.

The development of Silverthorne as a ski resort faced numerous challenges, including financial setbacks. However, in 1961, a group led by Paul Zimmerman acquired the property and further developed the ski resort plans. Construction began in 1967, and the resort, later named "Silverthorne Ski Area," officially opened in 1968.

Silverthorne Ski Area operated as a small local ski hill until 1981 when it closed due to financial difficulties.
