Sandwich, IL
County: DeKalb
History
Sandwich, IL is a city located in DeKalb County, Illinois. The town was founded in 1855 and originally named Newark Station, after the nearby town of Newark. It was established as a railroad depot along the newly constructed railroad line between Chicago and Rock Island.
In 1856, the town's name was changed to Sandwich, named after the town of Sandwich in New Hampshire, which was the hometown of several early settlers. The name was chosen through a coin toss between two founders, Clark and Frazier, as they couldn't decide on a name.
The early growth of Sandwich was primarily fueled by the railroad. It quickly became a major shipping point for the agricultural products of the surrounding area, such as corn, oats, and livestock. The town also developed a strong industrial base, with manufacturing companies like Del Monte and the Chicago Corset Company establishing facilities in the city.
Throughout its history, Sandwich has faced several challenges. In 1880, a major fire destroyed much of the downtown area, leading to the rebuilding and growth of the city. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, Sandwich suffered economically, like many other towns in the US. However, with the assistance of government-funded infrastructure projects, the city was able to recover.
Today, Sandwich is a thriving community with a rich history. The downtown area still showcases some of the original architecture from the late 19th century, giving it a charming and historic ambiance. The city hosts an annual event called "Sandwich Fair," which is one of the oldest continuing county fairs in Illinois, dating back to 1888. It attracts visitors from all over the region and continues to be a major attraction in the city.
Sandwich is also known for its numerous parks, outdoor recreational opportunities, and friendly community. The city has preserved its historical heritage while adapting to the needs of the modern era, creating a vibrant and welcoming place to live and visit.
