County: Hendry
History
Port LaBelle is a small unincorporated community located in Hendry County, Florida. It is situated on the Caloosahatchee River, about 30 miles east of Fort Myers. The history of Port LaBelle can be traced back to the mid-20th century when the area was primarily agricultural.
In the late 1950s, a group of investors, including the LaBelle Plantation Company, acquired a large tract of land in Hendry County with the intention of creating a new community. They envisioned a planned residential development that would attract retirees and young families seeking a peaceful rural lifestyle.
The developers recognized the potential of the Caloosahatchee River as a recreational hub and set out to create a man-made canal system to provide access to the river. This canal system, known as the Port LaBelle Waterway, became a defining feature of the community.
In 1962, the initial phase of development began. It included construction of roads, utilities, and the canal system. A golf course, recreational areas, and community facilities were also established.
The community grew steadily over the years, attracting residents looking for affordable housing and proximity to Fort Myers and other nearby cities. Many of the early residents were retirees and young families interested in the rural lifestyle and recreational opportunities offered by the river and canals.
Port LaBelle continued to expand throughout the late 20th century and early 21st century. New residential areas were developed, and commercial amenities like shopping centers, schools, and medical facilities were added to cater to the growing population.
Today, Port LaBelle remains a quiet and scenic community known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. It is home to diverse housing options, including single-family homes and condos, along with a range of amenities and facilities for residents to enjoy.
While the community remains unincorporated, it has continued to evolve and grow, maintaining its vision of providing a tranquil and affordable living environment while still offering access to larger urban areas nearby.
