Plumas Lake, CA
County: Yuba
History
Plumas Lake is a small community located in Yuba County, California. Its history dates back to the mid-19th century when it was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Nisenan people. The area was rich in natural resources, particularly gold, which attracted many European settlers during the California Gold Rush.
The first European settler in the Plumas Lake area was William Harris in 1849, who owned a large land grant. However, it wasn't until the completion of the California Pacific Railroad in 1862 that the area experienced significant growth. The railroad played a pivotal role in attracting new settlers and facilitating trade and transportation.
In 1910, a group of land developers, known as the Plumas Lake Land Company, began purchasing large tracts of land in the area with the intention of creating an agricultural community. The company built an elaborate canal system to bring water from the Feather River to irrigate the land, turning it into fertile farmland. They also constructed a reservoir, known as the Olivehurst Reservoir, which further supported agricultural activities.
During the early 20th century, Plumas Lake primarily focused on agricultural pursuits, with crops like rice, fruit trees, and vegetables being cultivated. The area also saw the development of dairy farms, which became an important part of the local economy.
In the 1950s and 1960s, the population of Plumas Lake grew significantly due to an influx of people seeking suburban living near larger cities. This led to further development and the establishment of residential neighborhoods. Over the years, Plumas Lake transformed from an agricultural community into a suburban town.
Today, Plumas Lake is a thriving residential area with a diverse population. It offers a quiet and rural atmosphere, while still being within commuting distance of larger cities like Sacramento, which is about 35 miles south. Despite its growth, Plumas Lake has managed to maintain its small-town charm and continues to attract new residents seeking a peaceful suburban lifestyle.
