Paradise, CA
County: Butte
History
Paradise, California is a small town located in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Butte County. Established in the late 19th century, the area was initially known as Pair-O-Dice. The community started to flourish after the California Gold Rush, as miners and settlers began to populate the region.
The town's official name changed in 1918 when the postmaster decided to rename it Paradise due to its scenic beauty. Paradise became a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors who were drawn to its picturesque landscapes, mild climate, and abundance of natural resources.
Logging became a significant industry in Paradise during the early 20th century. The town's vast forests provided timber for construction, and the growing logging industry played a crucial role in the area's economy.
Over time, Paradise evolved from a logging community into a residential town. Subdivisions were developed, and the population steadily grew. In 1979, Paradise officially became incorporated as a town.
Tragically, Paradise gained worldwide attention in November 2018 when it was ravaged by the devastating Camp Fire, the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California's history. The fire destroyed much of the town, resulting in the loss of numerous homes, businesses, and lives.
Since then, Paradise has been in the process of rebuilding. The community has shown tremendous resilience and determination, coming together to restore the town and support one another.
Today, Paradise is still a small, close-knit community surrounded by natural beauty. Despite its difficult recent past, it continues to attract visitors who are captivated by its scenic forests, mountains, and the spirit of its residents.
