History
Offutt Air Force Base (AFB), located near Omaha, Nebraska, has a rich and significant history in the United States military. Established in 1918 as Fort Crook, it initially served as an Army base before transitioning into its current role as an Air Force installation.
Fort Crook was established to protect the strategic Omaha area and the surrounding Missouri River valley during World War I. Its primary mission was to defend against possible German invasions from Mexico and assist with the training of soldiers. During this period, Fort Crook was equipped with coastal artillery for defense purposes.
After the war, in 1924, Fort Crook was transferred to the United States Army Air Corps, the predecessor of the United States Air Force. The airfield underwent significant expansions and improvements and primarily served as a training center for the newly emerging strategic bombing force. During World War II, Fort Crook became a major training base for thousands of airmen, including bomber pilots and navigators.
In 1948, the base was renamed Offutt Air Force Base, in honor of First Lieutenant Jarvis Offutt, a World War I aviator from Omaha who lost his life while testing an experimental aircraft. The base continued to expand and develop its infrastructure and capabilities, becoming the headquarters for a variety of command organizations.
One of the most significant events in Offutt's history occurred during the Cold War. In the early 1960s, Offutt AFB became the primary command center for the Strategic Air Command (SAC). SAC was responsible for maintaining America's nuclear strategic deterrence, coordinating bomber and missile operations, and managing the nation's nuclear stockpile. The base housed the underground command center, known as the "Warren ICBM Control Center," from where missile launch orders could be initiated.
Offutt AFB played a pivotal role during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 when it remained on high alert, monitoring and assessing the Soviet Union's activities. The base also contributed to other major historical events such as the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and more recent conflicts.
Currently, Offutt AFB is home to the US Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), one of the eleven major unified combatant commands of the Department of Defense. USSTRATCOM is responsible for the global command and control of the US military's strategic forces, including nuclear weapons and space operations.
As an integral part of the Omaha community, Offutt AFB has been a major employer in the region and a significant contributor to the local economy. The base has played a crucial role in the defense of the nation for over a century and remains a vital military installation in the heartland of the United States.
