History

North Lakeport, California

North Lakeport, located in Lake County, California, has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Before the arrival of European settlers, the region was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Pomo, Wappo, and Yuki people. These Native American communities thrived off the natural resources provided by Clear Lake, the largest freshwater lake wholly within California.

In the mid-19th century, European settlers began arriving in the area. The first permanent settlement, known as Scottsburg, was established in 1855 by Andrew Kelsey and Charles Stone. They built a hotel, store, and a ferry service across the lake, facilitating transportation and trade. However, the Scottsburg settlement was devastated by severe flooding in the winter of 1862-1863, and it was ultimately abandoned.

Following the decline of Scottsburg, another settlement emerged called West Lakeport, which was established in 1867. As the name suggests, it was situated on the western shore of Clear Lake. Benjamin Green, a businessman, built a hotel, store, and post office, attracting more settlers to the area. The town grew rapidly, thanks to its prime location for trade and transportation by steamboats.

In 1871, Richard Kelsey, Andrew Kelsey's brother, established a rival town on the northern shore of Clear Lake. It was named Kelseyville in honor of his late brother. Meanwhile, West Lakeport was renamed Lakeport, creating a distinction between the two towns on opposite shores of Clear Lake.

Over time, North Lakeport (now called Lakeport) developed into a bustling commercial and social hub, attracting settlers and businesses from surrounding areas. The construction of the railroad in the late 19th century further enhanced its growth and connectivity. The town boasted numerous hotels, saloons, shops, and agricultural industries, including fruit orchards and dairy farms.

In the early 20th century, North Lakeport faced challenges, including several devastating fires. In 1914, a catastrophic fire destroyed many buildings in the town, including the historic courthouse. However, Lakeport recovered and rebuilt.

Today, North Lakeport, known as Lakeport, remains the county seat of Lake County. It is a vibrant community that offers recreational opportunities, including fishing, boating, and wine tasting. The town's historical downtown area preserves some of its architectural heritage and serves as a reminder of its rich past.
