Nazareth, PA
County: Northampton
History
Nazareth, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in Northampton County in the eastern part of the state. The town has a rich history that dates back to the mid-18th century.
The area that would become Nazareth was originally settled by Moravian missionaries who arrived from Europe in the early 1740s. These settlers were part of the Moravian Church, a Protestant denomination, and they established a mission community called Nazareth in 1740. The missionaries aimed to spread Christianity among the Native American tribes in the area.
The Moravian settlers built a thriving community centered around their religious beliefs and principles. They established schools, a hospital, and various public buildings. Agriculture played a vital role in the community, and the settlers cultivated crops and raised livestock.
One of the notable landmarks in Nazareth is the Whitefield House, which was built in 1743 and is still standing today. The Whitefield House served as the headquarters for the Moravian leaders and also housed the single brothers of the community, who were unmarried Moravian men.
During the American Revolutionary War, the Moravians managed to maintain their neutrality, providing medical aid to both sides of the conflict. After the war, the town experienced a period of growth and industrial development. Mills and factories were established, becoming integral to the local economy.
In the 19th century, Nazareth was known for its production of musical instruments, including pianos and organs. The Martin Guitar Company, which is still in operation today, was founded in Nazareth in 1833 by Christian Frederick Martin Sr.
Over the years, Nazareth continued to evolve and grow. The town saw the construction of railroads in the late 19th century, which facilitated transportation and opened new economic opportunities. The growth of nearby cities such as Allentown and Bethlehem also influenced the development of Nazareth.
Today, Nazareth remains a small community but with a strong sense of its history and heritage. The town has preserved many historic buildings and landmarks, including the Moravian Historical Society, which maintains a museum and library dedicated to the history of the Moravians in Nazareth.
Nazareth's history as a Moravian mission community and its contributions to the fields of music and industry have shaped its identity and left a lasting legacy.
