Medical Lake, WA
County: Spokane
History
Medical Lake is a small city located in Spokane County, Washington. The city's history dates back thousands of years when it was inhabited by native tribes, particularly the Spokane Tribe of Indians, who established camps near the lake. They considered the lake to have healing properties and used it medicinally, leading to the name "Medical Lake."
In the late 1800s, non-native settlers discovered the lake and its reputed medicinal benefits. The first recorded visit by settlers was in 1855 when a group of soldiers from nearby Fort Spokane visited the lake. However, it was not until the 1870s when the area began to see permanent settlements.
In 1872, Dr. W.C. McKay, a Scottish physician, established a sanitarium on the shores of Medical Lake with the hope of utilizing the mineral-rich lake water to treat various ailments. This marked the beginning of Medical Lake's reputation as a health resort destination. In 1878, Dr. R.D. Williams opened a second sanitarium on Blumauer Hill, contributing to the growth of the community.
Incorporated as a city in 1890, Medical Lake continued to thrive as a health resort town. The town attracted people seeking the healing properties of the lake water, as well as visitors looking for outdoor recreation such as fishing and boating. Several large hotels were built to accommodate the increasing number of visitors, and the city's economy thrived.
During both World Wars, Medical Lake played a significant role as it housed military training facilities. In World War I, Camp Lewis, later renamed Fort Lewis, trained soldiers for deployment. In World War II, the city became home to Geiger Field, which trained aviation mechanics and housed German prisoners of war. These military installations played a crucial role in the development and growth of Medical Lake.
Over the years, the city's focus shifted from being primarily a health resort town to a residential community. The closure of many of the sanitariums and the decline of health tourism resulted in a shift in the city's economy. Today, Medical Lake is a close-knit community that still appreciates its natural surroundings, including the scenic lake and surrounding state park.
In recent years, Medical Lake has experienced growth as the Spokane metropolitan area continues to expand. The city remains a tranquil place with a rich history and a small-town charm. Despite changes over time, Medical Lake preserves its historical significance as a health resort destination and continues to offer a peaceful retreat for residents and visitors alike.
