History
McPherson, Kansas, is a city located in McPherson County, in the central part of the state. The history of McPherson dates back to the mid-19th century when it was part of the expansive Kansas territory.
Before European settlers arrived, the land where McPherson now stands was inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Pawnee people. European exploration of the area began in the early 1800s, and with the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, the region became open to settlement.
The town of McPherson was established in 1872 when the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway extended its line into the area. The town was named after General James B. McPherson, a Union Army officer who fought in the Civil War and was killed in action. This was done to honor McPherson's service and to attract investors in the railway project.
As the railway brought people and commerce to McPherson, the town grew rapidly. The discovery of natural gas in the area in the late 19th century also spurred economic development. Gas was piped into the city, providing fuel for both homes and industries and attracting more settlers.
The early economy of McPherson revolved around agriculture, with farming and ranching being the primary occupations. Wheat, corn, and livestock were some of the main agricultural products of the area. In the early 20th century, oil was discovered, leading to a boom in oil production and adding to the town's prosperity.
During World War II, McPherson played a significant role in the war effort as it became home to the U.S. Army Air Force's McPherson Bomber Plant. The plant produced B-29 Superfortress bombers, contributing to the war effort and providing employment for many local residents.
Over the years, McPherson has evolved into a major industrial and manufacturing center. Industries such as automotive parts, machinery manufacturing, and plastics have thrived in the area, providing employment opportunities and contributing to the local economy.
