History

Mathis, Texas

Mathis is a small city located in South Texas, in the county of San Patricio. Its history dates back to the mid-19th century when it was originally settled as a ranching community.

The area where Mathis is now situated was part of the vast Mexican land grant called "Palo del Colorado." In 1831, the land was acquired by empresarios James Power and James Hewetson, who intended to start a cattle ranch. However, due to political turmoil and the Texas Revolution, their plans were delayed.

After the Texas Revolution ended in 1836, many settlers began to move into the region. One of the early settlers in the area was John W. Mathis, a surveyor who arrived in 1851. He purchased land and established a ranch, which attracted other ranchers and settlers to the area. The community that developed around Mathis' ranch became known as Mathisville.

In the 1880s, the St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railway was constructed through the region, connecting Mathis to cities like Corpus Christi and San Antonio. This railroad connection provided a significant boost to the local economy and helped the town to grow.

Mathis continued to flourish in the early 20th century, with the establishment of several businesses and services like banks, schools, and post offices. Agriculture, particularly cattle ranching, remained the backbone of the local economy. Cotton farming also became important in the region.

In 1910, the citizens of Mathis voted to incorporate as a city, officially becoming known as the City of Mathis. Throughout the 20th century, the town continued to grow steadily, with the oil and gas industry playing a significant role in the local economy.

Today, Mathis remains a small, close-knit community with a population of around 5,000 people. It is known for its scenic beauty, as it is surrounded by the picturesque Nueces River and Lake Corpus Christi State Park. The town continues to be primarily agricultural, with ranching and farming as its main economic activities.
