Luverne, Minnesota is a small city located in Rock County in the southwestern part of the state. The area where Luverne is situated was originally inhabited by Dakota Sioux Native Americans. The town traces its roots back to the 1860s when settlers began to arrive in the area.

In 1867, the first permanent settler named S.H. Jackson established a trading post near the present-day site of Luverne. However, it was not until 1872 that the town was officially platted and named Luverne in honor of Luverne Hawes, the infant daughter of a local pioneer.
