History

Lake St. Louis, Missouri

Lake St. Louis is a man-made reservoir located in St. Charles County, Missouri. It was created from the vision of a real estate developer, Leo F. Tierney, who began exploring the idea of developing a large planned community with a lake in the early 1960s.

In 1965, Tierney formed the Lake St. Louis Development Corporation and began acquiring land for the project. The site chosen for the lake was a 680-acre tract of land that was primarily farmland and included a smaller natural lake called "Lake Wymore."

Construction on the lake began in 1966 and took about two years to complete. The project involved building a dam across Dardenne Creek, which created a 600-acre lake with approximately 17 miles of shoreline. The lake was designed as a water supply for the planned community, as well as to offer recreational opportunities.

Once the lake was completed, the development of Lake St. Louis as a residential community began. The community was envisioned as a suburban haven with scenic views, a marina, golf courses, parks, and a variety of amenities. The development attracted residents looking for a suburban lifestyle with easy access to recreation.

The community of Lake St. Louis was officially incorporated as a city on November 18, 1975, with the lake as its centerpiece. Over the years, the city has grown and developed, and it is now home to over 14,000 residents.

Today, Lake St. Louis is known for its picturesque waterfront properties, recreational activities on the lake such as boating and fishing, and its commitment to providing a high quality of life for its residents. The city continues to be a popular choice for those seeking a suburban lifestyle with easy access to urban amenities.
