La Habra Heights, CA
County: Los Angeles
History
La Habra Heights is a small city located in Los Angeles County, California. It is situated on the border of Orange County and covers an area of approximately 7 square miles. The city is known for its rural character, hilly terrain, and extensive open space.
The history of La Habra Heights dates back to the early 19th century when the area was inhabited by the Gabrielino/Tongva Native American tribe. These Native Americans lived off the land, hunting, gathering, and trading with other tribes in the region.
In the 1830s, the Mexican government granted the land to various rancheros as part of a system known as ranchos. The Rancho La Habra and Rancho Los Coyotes were two significant ranchos that covered the area now known as La Habra Heights.
In the late 1800s, the region began to see an influx of settlers from the eastern United States. Many of these early settlers were farmers attracted to the fertile soil and agricultural potential of the area. The community that developed was primarily agriculturally focused, growing citrus fruits, avocados, walnuts, and other crops.
La Habra Heights remained a predominantly rural and agricultural area throughout much of the 20th century. However, as nearby cities expanded and urbanized, pressure grew to develop the open land in La Habra Heights.
To preserve its rural character, residents of La Habra Heights voted to incorporate as a city in 1978. This move gave them local control over zoning and development, allowing them to control the growth and maintain the open spaces and rural atmosphere.
Today, La Habra Heights is a residential community that prides itself on its rural charm and natural beauty. It is known for its large estates, horse properties, and strict regulations to preserve the natural environment and the scenic views of the region.
Despite its proximity to the urbanized areas of Los Angeles and Orange County, La Habra Heights retains a small-town feel and offers its residents a peaceful and close-knit community. It has become a sought-after residential area for those who value privacy, nature, and the tranquility of a rural lifestyle.
