Jacksonville, Texas is a city located in Cherokee County, East Texas, United States. Its history can be traced back to the early 1800s when the region was inhabited primarily by the Cherokee Native American tribe. The area where Jacksonville now stands was originally part of the Cherokee Nation in what was then known as Mexican Texas.

In 1838, the Texas Congress granted the Republic of Texas' Secretary of State Memucan Hunt a large tract of land for his diplomatic services. Hunt sold the land to a group of pioneers led by John Neely Bryan, who founded Dallas, Texas, but the pioneers were constantly harassed by local tribes and US military. As a result, they were forced to leave the area in 1842.

The Texas legislature then established the Nacogdoches County judiciary, including Cherokee County, in 1846. A town was laid out on land donated by W. B. Ochiltree and was named Jacksonville to coincide with the establishment of the county. The name was chosen to honor US President Andrew Jackson, known for his populist policies.

During the Civil War, Jacksonville became an important Confederate town and was even the last Confederate Post Office to be captured by Union forces in 1865.
