History
International Falls, Minnesota, also known as the "Icebox of the Nation," is a city located in the northernmost part of the state. It is situated on the Rainy River, which forms the border between the United States and Canada. Here is a brief history of International Falls:
Native American tribes, particularly the Ojibwe people, were the first inhabitants of the area for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. In the late 17th century, French fur traders and explorers began to establish trading posts in the region. The fur trade played a crucial role in the area's early history and economy.
In the mid-19th century, the United States and Britain signed treaties to resolve their conflicting claims over the territory. The international border was demarcated, and the area became accessible for settlement. In 1895, a small community named Koochiching was established on the Rainy River, which later evolved into International Falls.
The city's significant growth began in the early 20th century with the arrival of the timber industry. The abundant forests of the region attracted logging companies, leading to the establishment of sawmills in International Falls. The timber industry brought economic prosperity and population growth to the area.
In 1901, the Koochiching Company built a paper mill in International Falls, which further bolstered the local economy. The mill, initially known as the Koochiching Pulp and Paper Company, later became part of the Boise Cascade Corporation. The paper mill has been a major employer in the city for over a century, and International Falls is often referred to as the "Paper Mill Capital of the World."
The city's unique climate, with extremely cold winters and heavy snowfall, became a defining characteristic and led to its famous nickname, the "Icebox of the Nation." International Falls started officially using the nickname in the 1940s and has continued to promote it as a cultural identity ever since.
In 1911, the Northern National Bank of International Falls completed construction of the first hydroelectric dam on the Rainy River, providing electricity for the city and aiding in its development.
Today, International Falls remains a thriving community with a diverse economy that includes timber processing, paper production, tourism, and retail. The city is also known for its stunning natural beauty, including the nearby Voyageurs National Park and the Rainy Lake, which offer recreational activities such as boating, fishing, and hiking.
