Independence, Minnesota, is a city located in Hennepin County, and is a western suburb of Minneapolis. The area now known as Independence was inhabited by indigenous Dakota people long before European settlement.

European settlement in the region began in the mid-19th century. The first recorded settler in Independence was Amos Wing, who arrived in 1853. The area was initially known as Maple Plain Township. More settlers arrived in the following years, and the township was officially organized in 1858.

Around the same time, the construction of the Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail brought additional growth and development to the area. The trail was originally built as a railroad line connecting Minneapolis to the Lake Minnetonka area, and it passed through what is now Independence.

The name "Independence" was officially adopted in 1861, inspired by the spirit of the American Revolution and the desire for self-governance.
