History
Grover Beach is a small coastal city located in San Luis Obispo County, California. The area that is now Grover Beach was originally inhabited by Chumash Native Americans for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers.
In the 19th century, the land was part of Rancho Pismo, a Mexican land grant awarded to William G. Dana in 1842. The town's history officially begins in 1887 when Isaac W. Grover, a French-Canadian entrepreneur, purchased 2,000 acres of the former rancho. Grover saw the area's potential as a beach resort due to its beautiful coastline and mild climate.
Grover planned and developed the town, constructing the first streets, a general store, a hotel, and a small wooden pier. He also brought in a train station, which increased the accessibility of the area. The town quickly attracted summer visitors from nearby cities who came to enjoy the beach and the natural beauty of the region.
The settlement was initially known as "Grover City," but it was later renamed "Grover Beach" in 1959 to reflect its ocean-side location. Over the years, the city slowly grew in size and population, with new residential neighborhoods being developed.
